CHAPTER 13

The Ravenclaw Girl

After breakfast they slumped to the library and organized their bags while they waited for everything to be situated with the other houses. "Let's just try not to annoy the old bird. I don't have the nerves for her today," Apolla said as she
They finished and Desiree pulled out her new Defense Against the Dark arts book. "Hey Apolla, look at this...Basics for Beginners...I have a bad feeling about this. Something's not right. Why would this new woman have us get Basics books for our OWL year?"
Apolla shrugged her shoulders and began waving her wand lazily in front of her. Someone behind them dropped a book and made Apolla lurched her wand in a slashing movement as she jumped and fell out of her chair. As her wand moved papers flew in every which way. She looked around and assessed the damage. Pince came scurrying from her office and looked around with her moth hanging wide open. She looked and saw Desiree and Apolla as the only two standing.
“YOU TWO!” she said as she pointed her long bony finger at the girls. “OUT! YOU MADE THIS MESS!” She flicked her wand and books came to life and started snapping at Desiree and Apolla. They ran out and ran down the nearest hallway. They ran and stopped at a corner and looked behind them. Desiree saw no one and sighed. Apolla walked forward and CRASH! She walked right into Trelawney carrying Tarot cards and muttering to herself. She fell on her end, hard on the ground. She looked at Apolla as though she was the strangest thing in her life. She stood up and brushed off her shawls.
“Professor...I-I-I, uh...I am really sorry,” Apolla said as she stood up.
“No matter, no matter..i merely saw you coming. I slowed down so the crash was not so hard. Well then I will see you two later.” she replied and walked off.
Apolla looked at Desiree who just shrugged her shoulders.
“I things here are going to be a little weird this year…” Desiree said as she stared down the hall at the still muttering Trelawney.
Her and Apolla walked started walking to their first class, Transfiguration. As they turned the corner to the Transfiguration square, where Desiree spotted Draco and is group lounging with his friends under a tree in the grass. Desiree tapped Apolla on the shoulder and pointed toward Draco. Apolla rolled her eyes and walked even faster. They walked on to the grass and sat on one of the benches in the shade. Desiree heard laughing and footsteps. She peered up and saw Draco walking toward her. With her wand already in her hand with the book up hiding most of her wand, she poked the tip over and pointed it toward the oncoming Draco. “Langlock,” she whispered. She looked up and saw Draco swallow and jump back. She heard a wet plop and smiled. She lowered her wand and kept on reading. Apolla obviously noticed what happened and looked up. She saw Draco trying to talk and giving a giggling Desiree dirty looks. Apolla looked at Desiree, who was doing all she could to keep from laughing.
“Desiree, what did you do?” Apolla stuffed her book back in her bag and pulled her ebony and beech wand.
“Just kept Draco’s mouth shut for a while,” she replied curtly. “There he goes, running to tell Snape...and watch, during lunch Snape is going to get me,” Desiree added. Apolla stood up as the large doors on the Transfiguration classroom opened. Apolla and Desiree walked in and looked at the seating chart on the front desk. Desiree was next to a Brenna Rourke, a Gryffindor whom she had never seen or heard of before. Apolla was next to some Ravenclaw who was already in her seat, her quill writing away at full speed. Desiree looked up and saw McGonagall sitting at her desk in the front of the room. Then a brunette with pale grey eyes walk up and look at the chart. She was smiling until her gaze was fixed on the Seating chart. Then her smile fell as though she’d been slapped. She sighed and walked up to the desk next to Desiree and slumped down in it. Desiree smiled hopefully at her, but she just ignored her. Desiree rolled her eyes and played with her quill as they waited for the rest of the class to show up. They only waited a few minutes before the classroom was filled and McGonagall stood up and walked forward. “Since this is your O.W.L. year, I find it fitting to start the years on stressing the importance of the exams.” Desiree watched as the Hufflepuff girl in front of her tossed a sickle to the girl next to her, unhappily. Desiree laughed quietly and looked back up at McGonagall. “You must have at least an Acceptable to pass, but I will only take Exceeding Expectations and above. So just because you passed with an A, doesn’t mean you will get in the class.” McGonagall talked all through the first 20 minutes of the class. Desiree dozed off and came back to full attention when two girls started passing out small toads and mice. “I will start everyone by reviewing the basics. Everyone start by review the spells on these lists.” She flicked her wand and the paper began to move. Each list placed itself on a student’s desk. “Begin at the top and don’t move on to the next spell until you have perfectly cast the first. You may begin.” As she sat down, students started casting the first spell. All simple...i could do these in my sleep, Desiree thought to herself as she looked down the list. She worked her way down the list until she got to the fourteenth one, at that time McGonagall called time.
“Alright, you may now take your subjects and place them in the box up here, and out your lists to the right of the box in a pile.” Desiree started up and as she stood up a blonde Ravenclaw. They both rammed into each other and fell to the ground, painfully. Desiree stood up and saw pale ghost-like blue eyes, blonde hair you could mistake for white hair, and an empty face with a hint of a smirk. She looked at Desiree and bent over to pick up her list and walked away. Desiree could not tear her eyes from her. She was intriguing, quiet, and interesting at the same time. Apolla tapped Desiree’s shoulder that Desiree broke from her trance. The girl walked out and around the corner in the hall. Desiree quickly followed her out and lost her as she went down the other hall. She sighed and turned to a following Apolla.
“Guess we better get to Defense Against the Dark Arts…I have no idea how this new woman is,” Desiree said. Apolla nodded and opened the door to the Grand Staircase.
