CHAPTER 12

New Term and New Teachers

“Desiree, are you mad? I mean, we will still be together, and I am sure we will have classes together. And that’s just classes, we could meet after our classes-“ Desiree cut him off.
“I am fine, like you said, its nothing, just different patches on our robes. And we probably will have many classes together. Last year the only classes I had that didn’t have any Ravenclaws in it were Potions and Divination. So it’s okay. Hey and since your in Ravenclaw I want you to watch over a couple people, make sure no one picks on them. Luna Lovegood, the strange girl with the blonde hair, you can’t miss her, she wears radish earrings. And Richelle’s little brother, he seems very pitiful, I don’t think he the kind that will stand up to bullies.” Pierre nodded his head. “I better go…See you in the morning. Make sure you get up on time. You don’t want to miss breakfast. And don’t put your uniform on wrong.”
“Desiree, I will be fine, I’m a big boy, I think I can handle it.”
“Alright, I will see you in the morning. Good night.”
“Night,” he said. They hugged and walked in opposite directions. Desiree walked down the three flights of stairs to the back entrance of the dungeons she caught up with the tour group of first year slytherins. The two prefects guiding them were Astoria Greengrass and Lisbeth Dawson. Lisbeth was a friend of Desiree’s, and was usually in the same bunk room as Desiree. Desiree walked up to the front and walked next to Lisbeth.
“Any room for me with the two new girls?” Lisbeth said as she saw Desiree next to her.
“Of course, what you think? We were going to throw you out with Pansy and Millicent? Ehh, just the thought of that scares me,” Desiree replied. Lisbeth laughed and walked around the corner. Astoria was the tour guide and Lisbeth was making sure she was going the right way, Astoria had to walk backwards to give the tour. Desiree turned to the first years while still walking.
“Okay little first years, my name is Desiree Malfoy, and if you need anything or help with anything, come to me or Lisbeth, here to my left.” Lisbeth raised her hand, while giggling. “Don’t go to anybody that looks stuck-up or full of themselves. You won’t get anywhere, I can promise you. And if you happen to be stopped by a Draco Malfoy, tell him he’s a fat git and to back off, I am sure you can do that. Now, welcome to Hogwarts! I am sure you will all love it here!” Desiree turned back around and looked at Lisbeth, who was now trying the hardest not to bust out laughing.
“Desiree, you shouldn’t have done that,” she said.
“What? It will get them far,” Desiree replied. Lisbeth rolled her eyes as they walked up to the portrait of the old witch.
“The Password, young students…now, now don’t waste my precious time,” the old witch said.
“Quiet now you old hag, be nice for the first years. You might be able to convince them you’re actually nice…Atrum Manus,” Desiree said.
“Old Hag!? How dare you! You best watch it missy! Old hag, old hag, I’ll show you old hag…” the witch said as the portrait swung open and they walked inside. Desiree rolled her eyes and walked in after the first years had gone through. They walked in the huge, stone common room and stood in the center. Although the ceilings were rather low in the back of the it, the slytherin common room was larger than all the other houses. It was twice as wide as the Gryffindor common room and 4 times as long. The rooms lined the sides. Girls rooms on the left, boys on the left. The whole common room was shaped like a half cross. There was a large area in the back of the room with the only windows, except for the couple rooms that had a small window, it had a few round tables and large bookcases. When you walk in you walk down a few steps then you come to the sitting area in front of the fireplace, which was most of the times lit. There were oil lamps in the back on the tables, which were lit. The whole common room was shaped like a half cross. There was another study area just like the one in the back on the opposite side of the fire place, but smaller. A large table sat in this study area with the trunks and bags, so the students could grab them and pick their rooms, unlike any other house could. At Christmas, that was where the tree was placed. The first years stood wide-eyed looking all around. Some whispering to their friends beside them, others were speechless. And of course, Desiree could see Draco in his usual spot, in the back, lounging on a couch, reading a book. Desiree waved to Astoria and walked up to Lisbeth.
“I’ll save you a spot, which is your trunk?” Lisbeth pointed to a dark trunk with her initials in bright blue on the front.
“The blue and silver bag next to it is mine as well. Thanks, and I should be there soon…so don’t start the party without me!” Lisbeth pointed out the large bag just barely visible behind her trunk.
Desiree started to walk over. “How could we? You ARE the party!” Desiree laughed and walked up and pulled her trunk and bags out. “Great, there is no way I am doing this in one trip,” she said as she looked at everything. She looked over and saw someone practicing Wingardium Leviosa on some books. She smiled and pulled out her wand. She tied Lisbeth’s single bag to her trunk. “Well, here it goes.” She picked up her bags and hung them on her shoulders. She picked up her trunk and held it with her left hand and pointed her wand, in her right hand at Lisbeth’s trunk and bag. “Wingardium Leviosa!” The trunk lifted simply off the ground and floated a good 2 feet off the ground. Desiree smiled and walked over to the room they usually pick, the only girls’ room with a window, with her wand over her shoulder pointing at the trunk. She knocked on the door with her elbow. Apolla answered the door and immediately saw the trunk floating behind Desiree.
“Not light packers are we, Desiree?” She teased as she opened the door.
“Ha-ha, very funny. It’s Lisbeth’s stuff, is there a bed for her?” Desiree walked in and saw everyone was sitting on their beds. Apolla took her trunk and bag and set it by Desiree’s bed while Desiree put Lisbeth’s stuff down and rolled it to the last bed on the right of the door. “And we are under strict orders not to start the party without her, she won’t be long. She only has to show the first years their rooms, and then she will be here.”
“How did they look? Mean and tough? Like last year’s bunch?” Apolla sat down on her bed, the bed just left of the only window. It was the rule that Desiree and Apolla get the beds next to the window.
“Oh yeah, they bite too! Please, they hardly look as if they could even stand one class with Snape. A jittery bunch, one looked pretty tough though. But then again, he looked like a Goyle look-a-like…maybe I could hire him as a body guard,” Desiree explained. The other girls laughed as Lisbeth walked in.
“What’s this? Do I hear laughing? There’s not supposed to be laughter! We are snotty slytherins! And better yet…the prefect gets the worst spot in the room!” Lisbeth put on a serious face as the other girls rolled at the top of their lungs in laughter. Rosalba sat up and fluttered the eyelashes.
“We were worried you would take points off us if we didn’t let you sleep in here, and we were here first,” Rosalba said innocently. Lisbeth looked at Rosalba, and silence went across the room. Everyone stared at each other. Then almost instantaneously everyone burst out laughing.
“Oh it’s good to be back!” Desiree pulled her silver whistle from her bag. She pulled out envelopes from her bag and set it down on her table. She opened the small window and blew on her whistle. She waited for a moment then saw a grey figure form in the darkness. Her beloved owl flew to the window and landed on the sill. Desiree held out her arm and Odellette inched on her forearm. Desiree picked up the envelopes and handed them to Odellette. She snatched them with her beak. “Take these to my father, he will know what to do with them, then come straight back and I will give you a big treat,” she explained. She scratched the owl behind her wings and put her arm out the window. Odellette flew off into the darkness then disappeared. Desiree leaned back and joined back in the endless conversations with the girls.
The next morning Desiree woke up early. She dressed and shuffled out of her room. She looked at the board and saw she had Transfiguration, double Potions, Divination, and then double Defense Against the Dark Arts. “Ehh, an awful Monday,” she muttered under her breath. She grabbed her bag from her room and slung it over her shoulder, she grabbed her books in the other hand and went back out and sat at one of the empty tables. She stuffed her books in and grabbed a random book from the shelves. She pulled out a dark blue leather book. In gold on the cover “Blood Brothers: My Life Amongst the Vampires, By Eldred Worple” shone in silver ink. Desiree sighed and flicked through the pages reading little bits. A door opened and slam closed behind her and jerked around to see who it was. She saw Apolla shuffle out and look at the notice board. She sighed and hunched over. Obviously she feels the same as I do, Desiree thought. Apolla shuffled over and launched herself on the sofa. Desiree slipped out of her seat and sneaked over behind the sofa. She peeked over and put her two fingers in her mouth and whistled as loud as possible. Apolla jumped up so fast she plummeted off the sofa. She sat up and rubbed her head. She looked up and saw Desiree shrieking with laughter. Apolla stood up and put her hands on her hips.
“That is so not cool.” She said and saw that some people were poking their heads out of their doors, rolling their eyes and scuff back in their rooms. “And, you woke up all the Slytherins here. Good job...Ooo, they are not going to be happy with you. Their first day back and they get a blaring wake-up call that sounds like a murder scream.”
“Sorry, I couldn’t resist! Anyway, they’ll get over it. They will be more mad with their classes they have on the first day than their wake-up call. Did you see what we have?”
“Yes, awful…although it took me forever to choose what I wanted to do as my elective and send the letter in.” Apolla said as she flung herself on the sofa. Desiree nodded.
“Well, we have a free hour after breakfast while First years, Hufflepuffs, and Gryffindors do schedules…What do you want to do?” Desiree pulled her wand out and twiddled with it in her hand. She waved it hard out toward the back on the room from the couch. Suddenly all the doors flung open and slammed back shut. Desiree and Apolla stared wide-eyed from their seats as people rushed out in their pajamas. All with their wands ready and brandishing. Draco turned to them and gave them a nasty look and walked back in his room.
“What was that for? We were all awake with your first wake up call! Now this! These first years look like they are about to wet themselves!” Lisbeth marched over to them and held her wand up and poked it right between Desiree’s eyes. Desiree crossed her eyes and gazed at it.
“What are you going to do? Kill me? Go on, hurry up and do it, that way the house elves can clean up the mess while you’re at Breakfast!” Desiree looked up at Lisbeth while Apolla was giggling. Lisbeth sighed and stomped back in the room. Later Rosalba and some others came out dressed and ready to go.
“What do we have today? I hope it’s not too bad,” Rosalba said as she yawned and stretched out on the sofa. Desiree pointed at the Notice board. Rosalba took one look and shriveled her nose.
“Look at the time, let’s go down to the Great hall for some food,” Apolla said pointing at the clock above the fireplace. It read 7 o’clock, just when they let the kids in for Breakfast. They stood and walked out the portrait hole into the dungeons and up the couple flights of stairs. They walked in the great hall and a handful of teachers were already eating, but a whole crowd of students were piling in the large hall. They trio of girls sat at the Slytherin table and immediately started eat. Desiree noticed a small white dot flying down from the air. The gray and white owl landed near her and she tore the letters quickly from the owl’s leg. She looked at the letters and stuffed them in her bag. Desiree scratched the owl’s head. Desiree turned back and resuming her conversation. Odelette didn’t even flap her wing or take off. Desiree looked back at her and held up her hands. “What?” The owl screeched loudly and snapped her beak. Desiree jumped back and now everyone in the hall was staring at her. Desiree held out a handful of her food and the owl ate some and happily took off. Apolla looked at her and shrugged her shoulder. Desiree looked around and looked back at Apolla. Almost simultaneously, every conversation continued. Desiree sighed and fell back on Apolla.
