CHAPTER 3

Hermione had cried for over an hour. There was nothing good about anything that had been going on. Everything was going terribly, everything was just going terrible. Her entire life was falling apart before her eyes and all she wanted to do was crawl inside her and possibly just die. Instead, she had fallen asleep. It was one of the worst sleeps she had ever had in her entire life. All that she could do was have nightmares that dealt with Harry or Ron.

Professor Snape walked into Hermione’s Common Room with Professor McGonagall and let out a sigh as he watched her sleep for a moment. She was asleep where Snape had left her earlier, on the couch when she had been sobbing. “She must have worn herself out,” he said.

“Miss Granger, I need you to wake up,” McGonagall said as she clapped her hands gently, trying to get the seventeen-year-old girl awake. “Come now, Miss Granger, wake up.”

Hermione moved and sat herself up as a groan escaped her lips, signifying that she was far from an early riser. She rubbed at her eyes and looked up at McGonagall and Snape. Running a hand through her knotted hair, Hermione let out a sigh as she realized that Snape had probably asked McGonagall to try to help him get Hermione to act the way that a young lady should; too bad that she wanted nothing to do with anyone at the moment. She had put a confundling spell on her parents so that they wouldn’t even remember that they had a daughter, Harry and Ron had gone, and everyone that she was close to were either gone or didn’t care. Why would Hermione want to be near anyone or put up with anything that they had to say if she just wanted to get away from everything and everyone?

“Miss Granger, we need to speak with you about something that is mildly important,” McGonagall said as she looked down at the girl. She had that stern look on her face that she usually did but her eyes were soft. She knew that Hermione wasn’t dealing with everything well at the moment. To be completely honest, she wasn’t in the best state of mind either but she, unlike Hermione, was able to stay strong and keep people from knowing how hurt she was. Dumbledore, the only man that she had ever loved besides her late husband, was gone and two of her students that she looked up to for their bravery were far from being safe. As she looked down at the girl, she felt her own feelings begin to spill out of her. She turned away from Hermione and walked over to a window, leaving Hermione and Severus together.

“What did you two wake me up for?” Hermione asked as she looked up into the dark, almost black, eyes of Severus Snape. “I get it, you two just ‘want to make sure that I’m doing OK’ but honestly; I just want to be left alone for a little while.”

“Miss Granger, that is no way to speak to your superiors!” Snape responded.

“That’s funny,” Hermione responded as McGonagall walked back over to them, her stern look back to her face, “because the last time I checked, I was on the good side meaning that I’ll be your superior, Headmaster, when Harry and Ron come back with You-Know-Who’s head in his hands!”

“Quite ambitious, are we?” Snape replied as he looked down at her. “You don’t know what the Dark Lord is capable of.”

“Obviously you haven’t been watching what Harry is capable of either have you?” Hermione asked before standing up and starting to walk away.

“Where do you think you’re going, Miss Granger? It’s after hours!” McGonagall said as she watched Hermione stop at the door. Hermione wanted to get as far away from them as possible and if that meant going to the Slytherin Common Room, being yelled at and made fun of, so be it. She was happy that she knew how to get into people’s minds after a while because that meant that she could get the new passwords from McGonagall all she wanted. “Miss Granger,” McGonagall said as she strained to keep her hands from her temples as a massive headache started to hit her, “you know that it is against school rules for you to wander around the halls!” Hermione stared at them for a few seconds before walking right out of the Common Room. She didn’t want to be near anyone but she didn’t want to be locked in a room where she couldn’t even talk to anyone!

Instead of making her way to the Gryffindor tower or even to the Slytherin dungeons, Hermione made her way outside. As the clean, oxygenated air filled Hermione’s lungs, all she wanted to do was run, and that’s exactly what she did which was perfect because someone decided that following her to try to catch her. Bolting, Hermione took off towards the lake, running as fast as she could and not halting for Draco Malfoy, the platinum blonde haired guy who was currently chasing her. She paused at the lake which was a dumb mistake on her part because Draco caught up to her.

“Are you deaf?!” he yelled as he bent over his knees, panting. “I have been chasing you and yelling for you to halt!”

“Since when are you, a. the boss of me, and b. my father?” she asked as she turned to look at him, smirking at the fact that she felt invigorated while he was gasping for air. “Besides, give me one good reason as to why I would stop for you?”

“B-Because it’s dangerous out here!” he stammered as he looked up at her.

“That’s because you helped make it that way,” she said bitterly as she started to walk. Draco, surprisingly, tried his best to follow her as he gripped at the stitch that was obviously in his side. “What do you want from me Malfoy? I just want to be left alone while getting out of my Common Room and yet, here you are.”

“Snape…He…” Draco began through gasps of air.

“Enough said,” Hermione said, cutting him off as she ran a hand through her hair and shook her head. At the moment, though, all Hermione wanted to know was why Snape was trying to keep her the closest eye on her. But why would he send someone like Draco Malfoy, someone who wouldn’t care if Hermione was dead, out to help get her back inside to keep her safe. “Tell me Malfoy, why are you so keen on helping him keep me safe?” she asked.

“Tell me Granger, why are you so intent on not letting anyone help you keep your mind off of the two idiots who are in for the worst?” he asked. Hermione looked over at Draco and then looked away. He didn’t want to help her and she knew that better than anyone. “Granger, I know the stuff that those two are going to be put up against and it’s some bad stuff…”

“Why are you telling me that?!” she yelled as she turned to him, tears falling from her eyes. She didn’t even care that Malfoy was there, seeing her cry. “Why are you telling me what I am fearing greatly at the moment? WHY ARE YOU SO HEARTLESS TOWARDS ME?!” Hermione ran a hand through her hair as she felt a restless feeling in her chest. It was a feeling that she had been getting lately. She figured it was from stress but she didn’t care to really find out. “Listen Malfoy, all I ask is that you leave me alone and never mention Harry or Ron, ever, and I’ll make sure that I’ll stay out of your way and everything. Deal?” she asked. Draco didn’t say anything as he looked at Hermione’s outstretched hand that only stayed like that for a few minutes before she turned on her heel and ran back to the castle and back to her Common Room. It was only a matter of time before something major happened between Draco and Hermione and, surprisingly, she couldn’t wait to find out what that something was going to be.
