CHAPTER 7

Hermione wasn’t sure she heard right. Could Kendra have possibly said something different? Hermione ran through the possibilities of what she could have said. She couldn’t have said stop him, as in stop him. She was a Death Eater and clearly involved with Malfoy, the same Malfoy whose father had been one of Voldemort’s most reliable followers up until his death two years ago. She couldn’t possibly be suggesting that they stop him, could she? Didn’t she realize the risk such a thing entailed?

Kendra looked frighteningly serious. Her hands were folded in her lap, her ringed fingers entwined, her head tilted to the side while she looked at her curiously. “Did you hear me?” Kendra asked. “About stopping the Dark Lord?”

Hermione nodded her head slowly. “Um…yes. I heard you. But why? Why do you need my help?”

Malfoy let out an audible sigh that made known exactly how ludicrous he thought the question was, as if she should already know. “Draco, love,” Kendra said softly, looking over at him. “Do you mind?”

Malfoy folded his arms across his chest turning his attention to the flickering flame of one of the torches on the wall. The way he obeyed Kendra was unfamiliar to Hermione. She was so used to seeing him as defiant to everyone with the exception of his father. He didn’t dare to challenge Kendra and he didn’t look like he wanted to. He allowed her to take the reins, as did Snape, who seemed to be doing it for drastically different reasons than Malfoy, whose own reasons were visibly more romantic.

“We need your help, Hermione, because you are the most intelligent witch of your time,” Kendra explained. “And there is one way to ensure that you will not have to be in hiding any longer. It’s not the most appealing situation, not for you anyway, but it is the only way. The only way to ensure that we can do this to utmost effect is for the Dark Lord to believe that you have joined him.”

Noticing Hermione’s appalled expression, Kendra backpedaled furiously. “Of course, we could probably try to do it with you in hiding, but it would be much more simple if you were to do it our way.”

“Wouldn’t it make things worse?” Hermione pointed out. “If I were to do that, wouldn’t he be suspicious if I changed my mind just like that?”

“Doubtful,” Kendra smirked. “He likes to believe he’s intimidating enough to make anyone change their beliefs. We all know that’s happened enough that he won’t question it, not much anyway. And if he does, we have ways, Hermione. You’ll be as safe as we can make you, but there’s no doubt that he will watch you and to watch you is to hinder you for however short a time. But we can work around it and when he begins to trust you, all will go as planned.”

Hermione couldn’t believe he was considering such a thing. She wasn’t even sure she believed what they were saying yet! Kendra went on. “It will be difficult at first, especially when you receive the Dark Mark but –

“Absolutely not!” Hermione exclaimed jumping to her feet. Malfoy moved forward, as if to shield Kendra from an attack he believed was coming, but Kendra held out her hand and he leaned against the wall again. “I will not be branded as one of them. One of you!”

“I’m not sure if I should be offended or not,” Kendra remarked, laughter in her voice.

“Why do you want to stop him anyway?” Hermione demanded, gripping her wand tightly. “You’ve been loyal to him since the moment he regained power!”

Kendra rose up, towering over Hermione in her boots as Malfoy stepped forward again, standing at Kendra’s side. “There have been…recent developments,” he said, “that have led us to question our loyalty.”
Hermione wondered what those recent developments were. What could make them decide to question their allegiance to the most powerful wizard alive? What had happened?

Snape, maybe feeling left out of the ensuing conversation, stepped forward as well. “Besides, Miss Granger, we thought you would be rather interested in learning the fates of the friends you left behind?”

“What friends?” Hermione demanded. “Everyone’s dead!”

Kendra shook her head. “Not all of them. Neville Longbottom is still alive in France, I believe. As are Bill and Fleur Weasley. Oliver Wood even and others. They’re all quite taken with our plan."
