CHAPTER 10

When Hermione reappeared in a sea of green flames, she stumbled from the fireplace. She was caught by cold hands on her arms which held her steady. Hermione looked up at Malfoy who let her go as if he’d been burned. He brushed past her to face the ivory mantle

A booming voice sounded as a short, muscular man entered the room dressed in all black, his dark hair sticking up over his head. His mouth was twisted into a scowl, reflecting his irritation. “Bloody h.ell! Where have you been?” he demanded. It took Hermione a moment to recognize his shape as the other man she had seen accompanying Kendra when she had first seen them since neither Snape or Malfoy were short enough to even be mistaken for him. “You go off alone without telling anyone! You leave me alone out there! One might think you were up to something.”

“Careful, Crabbe,” Kendra said as she appeared in the fireplace, quickly throwing off her cloak, which Malfoy put on his arm. “All that thinking can’t be good for you.” She grabbed Hermione’s wrist. Expecting her grip to be just as painful as it had been earlier, she winced, but Kendra pulled her along gently. They moved past the man with ease, heading through a marble archway and down a wide hallway lined with antiques and portraits of the Malfoy ancestors.

They all had the same features. Light blond hair, pale skin and blue eyes. All except one where a slender woman with dark hair and caramel colored skin posed. As Hermione and Kendra got closer to the portrait, moving past it, Hermione realized who it was, Kendra. She wore a long, black, strapless gown, her emerald pendant winking at her chest. Her dark hair hung down her back, pushed back from her forehead with a thin headband encrusted with diamonds. There was a secretive smirk on her pretty face. Her fingers were all covered with the same rings she wore at that moment as she held a single red rose in her hands. The Dark Mark was visible on her right forearm. But amidst the gleaming silver rings with various inscriptions and jewels embedded in them, there was one that Hermione recognized immediately as an engagement ring. The diamond sitting on the platinum band was beautiful with the most impeccable cut she had ever seen. It took Hermione a moment to realize the significance and what it meant, Kendra and Malfoy were engaged.

The portrait of her there in that hallway with the other Malfoys signified another reigning Malfoy wife to take the place of the widowed Narcissa. Another wife of one of Voldemort's most trusted servants. Why would they want to give up that stability and shield of safety, the assurance that they would be taken care of for the rest of their lives as long as their loyalty to the Dark Lord remained intact?
