CHAPTER 5

Hermione reluctantly raised the glass to her lips, the cool liquid running down her throat as she swallowed. It certainly tasted like water, but she wasn’t so quick to believe that the Death Eaters were actually working to keep her hydrated. The girl watched Hermione finish her drink. “More?” the girl offered, taking the glass. Hermione’s fingers brushed hers and the stinging coldness of her fingers was shocking. She drew back her hand rapidly, the chill still on her fingertips, but the girl didn’t seem to notice.

Hermione shook her head. The girl passed the glass to the other Death Eater, not her boyfriend, but the other who seemed mildly out of place there, like he was just tolerated as an added companion and not necessarily wanted. “Onto introductions then,” the girl said with a faint smile. Hermione stared at her, noting the expression on her face. She was the only one of the three other people in the room to show her face to her. What was it about the other to that made them keep their faces hidden from her while this girl showed her identity to her and was about to introduce herself? They had nothing to fear. The world was at their command, no one would arrest them and put them in Azkaban, why hide their faces when there was nothing anyone could do about it anyway?

“My name,” the girl said, “is Kendra Thallimar.” She spoke slowly, staring into Hermione’s eyes, noting the defiance countered by terror there. “I apologize for the inconvenience, Hermione Granger, but I promise that it will be made up to you.” The longer Hermione heard her speak, the more enchanted she became with her voice. She spoke with such eloquence and politeness it was hard to imagine her as a lowly Death Eater much less a killer with bigoted tendencies towards muggle-borns.

“How?” Hermione demanded. “Are you going to let me go?” She tensed in her seat, wringing her hands. She was sure Kendra could feel the fear rolling off of her in waves.

“Not quite,” Kendra said regretfully. “Soon, but not yet.”

“Then what do you want?” Hermione asked. “Why am I here?”

“Why do you think you’re here?” Kendra asked, tilting her head to the side and examining Hermione’s face.

“I’m not sure anymore,” Hermione replied. “I assumed you were taking me to…You-Know-Who, but seeing as how I’m here and not there, I’m guessing I was wrong.” She wished so badly to be able to say his name, but that could make things worse. She wasn’t sure of the curse that drew out his followers when his name was spoken was still in place, but she wasn’t interested in finding out. Besides, she was already in the company of a few of his followers all ready, but something told her that if she said it things would be made incredibly difficult and not just for her.

Kendra cracked a smile. “Partly. But that was a very good guess. It will all be explained soon enough.” She stood and approached her boyfriend, resting a graceful hand on his shoulder. “But for now, I will only stick to the basics. I would like to introduce you to my companions. I believe you have met before.” Her hand moved in a blur as she pulled down the hood, revealing his face. Hermione gasped, staring into the face of Draco Malfoy.
